Even around the holidays, it can feel like our conversations stay at the surface. We chat about schedules, weather, or whatever feels safe. But real connection, the kind that helps us feel seen and understood, rarely happens by accident.

That’s why I keep coming back to the research behind Dr. Arthur Aron’s 36 Questions for Increasing Closeness.

His work shows that meaningful connection grows when two people gradually open up, take turns sharing, and listen with genuine curiosity. And it does not take hours.

One study found that just 45 minutes of structured self-disclosure can help strangers feel closer than people expect to feel in their closest relationships.

What I love about this research is how accessible it is. The questions guide us to share at a similar pace, so the conversation never feels one-sided. They help us move from cringey small talk to something deeper that feels safe and natural.

And these questions are not only powerful in new relationships. They can strengthen existing ones too.

With colleagues who rarely get to talk about anything beyond logistics
With learners who are craving belonging and connection at school
With family members gathering around a holiday table
With friends we want to know on a deeper level

Because connection grows when curiosity grows.

That’s why I turned the first 12 of Dr. Aron’s questions into a free resource you can use anywhere: the Creating Connection Cards.

They work well in a staff meeting, advisory, morning circle, leadership retreat, or at home around the dinner table.

And with Thanksgiving coming up, you might be surprised how a single thoughtful question can spark a memorable conversation.

A few simple ways to bring the cards into your world:

Pick one question for a team meeting to replace the usual icebreaker
Invite learners to choose one card and respond in partners
Place a few cards on the Thanksgiving table for gentle, meaningful conversation
Use them at home to create a tech-free moment of connection

Small shifts like these help us step out of autopilot and into more intentional relationships.
