When everything lives in our head or on one long list, our brain treats every task as urgent. That is cognitively expensive. Research consistently shows that constant urgency keeps us reactive and drains our attention.

Simply getting everything out of our head and onto paper already lightens the mental load.

That alone is progress.

Evolve

Once everything is out, clarity comes from sorting, not doing more.

A simple and powerful lens for this is the Eisenhower Decision Matrix.

• Urgent and important: do it now.

• Not urgent but important: decide when it gets done.

• Urgent but not important: delegate it.

• Not urgent and not important: delete it.

This matters because urgency tends to shout, while importance often whispers. Without a pause, we spend our time reacting instead of protecting what truly matters.

Before responding to the next task, email, or request, try asking one simple question:

Which box does this really belong in?

Thrive

That moment of clarity changes how we spend our time, energy, and attention.

Sorting before we unplug for the holidays can also make re-entry easier. When we decide what truly matters and what can wait, be delegated, or be let go, we are less likely to return to a wall of urgency. Instead, we come back with clearer direction and fewer mental tabs competing for attention.

As many of us step into a holiday break, this is not about squeezing more in. It is about releasing what does not belong and making space for rest, presence, and what actually restores us.

We do not need a perfect system. We just need a better lens.
