“3 Re’s” to avoid GIGO with ChatGPT

“GIGO” or “garbage in, garbage out” is a saying that means if you put bad information into a computer or system, you’ll get bad results out of it. As an AI language model, ChatGPT relies on high-quality input (questions, prompts) from users to provide accurate and helpful responses so here’s what I do.

• Reflect: Before starting, think about the goal and the ideal product. Also include details for context and constraints without revealing private info.

• Revise: Look for the good in ChatGPT’s initial response and think critically about what you wish was better. Clarify the context & constraints as needed.

• Review: Check for errors. We have to remember, the AI wants to please us and we humans are responsible for the final product.

The Bonus “Re” is Regenerate and I love to use this when I need to say the same thing to more than one person, but I don’t want to say it in the exact same way. something I’ve been working on since my last email…

I find it really tough to ask for help, but recently I did and, wow, am I glad I did! Typically, when I'm invited to keynote, someone within the organization has already seen me speak. However, it's not always the case, and for years, I've wanted to put together some footage of my talks.

It's not that I enjoy watching myself on stage (that’s actually a bit hard and cringey). My goal is to share messages I find important with those I deeply care about: my fellow educators and the learners they serve.

So, how do you get such footage? Ideally, with the help of a professional. At this year's Digital Learning Annual Conference, I took a bold step and asked if their amazing videographer, Jeremiah Karr, could record parts of my talk. It was hard to ask, but I knew the team was wonderful and they agreed.

After the conference, I hired Jeremiah to combine the DLAC footage with other materials to tell my story. I'm thrilled with the final product and excited to share it with you all!
