Honestly, it’s that second one that had me rethinking things. As an educator and a mom, I never want to get in the way of kids developing their own independence. But in times of uncertainty, I start feeling anxious and I crave control. This is when I start overdoing it. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not going to pump the brakes on my passion and perseverance. My strong work ethic isn’t going anywhere, but when I feel myself shifting into an unhealthy overdrive, I’m trusting others with tasks and it is liberating. One of my favorite ways to do this in the classroom is to ask learners to be video tutorial creators. I give this as a choice to demonstrate understanding. It’s formative assessment that deepens their learning AND they’re creating a resource that can help other learners. This is just one example of how delegating not only lightens my load but also empowers those around me, strengthening their independence and sense of belonging.
