I shared with the PLI audience (and with you here) a confession:
For years, I proudly claimed “multitasker” as a badge of honor. With an astounding amount of hubris, it was more than just a way I operated, it was how I defined myself. “I am a multitasker.” But then I came across the work of Dr. Amishi Jha, which teaches that our attention can be thought of like a flashlight. We only get one flashlight and we can only shine it on one thing at a time. Multitasking, in reality, is task switching, which slows us down, increases mistakes, and exhausts us emotionally. I also realized I was missing opportunities for connection because I was too busy task switching and trying to check things off my to-do list.
