One of my fav people, Lauren Kaufman, was in town this past week, and we met for lunch to catch up and toast to the release of What Makes a Great Principal: The Five Pillars of Effective School Leadership, written by George Couros and Allyson Apsey, along with 15 incredible contributors. Wow, are we excited! πŸŽ‰

A couple months ago, George sent me an advance copy of What Makes a Great Principal and reading it felt like attending a masterclass in exceptional leadership. This book offers a 360-degree view on what makes a principal truly great, highlighting profound insights and actionable strategies as well as heartfelt stories that demonstrate the transformative power of effective leadership.
People are more likely to take steps forward on a path if they see footprints from others on the ground. - George Couros

Here are a few of my key takeaways:

  1. The Profound Impact of Leadership: A great leader can have a remarkable influence on both our professional and personal lives. The stories shared by Couros, Apsey, and the contributors deepen our appreciation for educational leadership and inspire us to pay it forward by empowering and uplifting those we serve.

  2. Universal Pillars with Sample Pathways: As someone who values universals, I'm drawn to the timeless wisdom that unites us. I also recognize the unique and dynamic nature of individuals. With that in mind, I think it is so beautiful that George and Allyson identify the universals in leadership, which they call the five pillars, and then generously offer stories with examples to inspire us to chart our own path.

  3. Valuing Community Voices: By incorporating perspectives from teachers and students who have experienced great leadership, the book emphasizes the importance of truly listening to those we serve as we continuously improve. This inclusive approach not only enriches our understanding but also highlights the importance of feedback in informing our practice.
The most valuable commodity in any school is the collective wisdom of the educators, and the answers to all of our challenges are there, waiting for us to uncover together.
