It’s June! 😎 Summer’s almost officially here and most kids (and some grown-ups) have more time for devices. As adults, we can model healthy practices and guide kids to use this time positively, but where do we start?

Using the W.W.W. Approach to Screen Time: The W.W.W. (What for?, Why now?, What else?) framework by Catherine Price (author of How to Break Up With Your Phone) is an excellent tool for managing screen time and one I use myself. We can guide children to ask themselves:

What for? Why are you using the device right now? Is it for connection, inspiration, learning, or entertainment? Ensure there’s a clear purpose.

Why now? Reflect on what triggered your device use. Was it boredom, a break from other activities, or just a habit?

What else? Consider what else you could be doing at this moment. Are there other opportunities or activities you might be missing out on by spending time on screens?

As a parent, I’m fully aware that unstructured time (like long summer days) makes it hard to make healthy choices, but by using this framework, we (kids and adults) can engage with devices more mindfully and purposefully.
