I didn’t ask them to join. I didn’t make a big deal out of it. I just let it be part of our home again. And it was reading for joy, no other agenda. Then, something incredibly beautiful happened. My kids started to read more on their own. We started going to the library to stock up on books. Now there are piles of books on the coffee table and on nightstands. Plus, my 11-year-old, who used to prefer fiction, is now devouring nonfiction.
Right now, he’s reading Passion Struck by John R. Miles, and Grit by Angela Duckworth is up next. While I know this will ebb and flow, I’m going to keep reading for joy—and hope it stays contagious. As a longtime fan of Jim Trelease (The Read-Aloud Handbook), I know how powerful it is to make reading visible and valued. And I’m reminded: reading is better as an invitation than a mandate. So here’s a thought— What if we didn’t default to another binge-worthy series? What if we picked up a novel, a memoir, or even a magazine instead? What ripple might that create for ourselves and the people around us? Let’s keep noticing, evolving, and thriving—one page at a time.
