I haven’t ignored the hard, but I now refuse to overlook the good. That shift has made all the difference. Gratitude doesn’t just shape my personal life, it shapes my work. Over the past few months, I’ve had the privilege of connecting with thousands from across the country. Yes, I’m speaking, but I’m also listening deeply to their insights, stories, and takeaways from our time together. In honor of turning 50 and reflecting on what matters most, I wanted to share what’s been resonating most strongly with the folks I’ve been able to connect with. (Maybe I even got to connect with you in person this summer!) What’s Resonating Right NowI used ChatGPT to help me review hundreds of comments, and here’s what stood out: Gratitude as a daily driver – Not just a “feel-good” extra, but a lens for leading, learning, and living. Perspective shifts – From “noticing like a kid” to remembering all feelings are welcome (but not all behaviors). Simple, usable strategies – praise-to-correction ratio, reflection activities, and learner-driven approaches. Stepping back so learners step up – Creating more agency and ownership in learning communities. Intentionality beyond school – Protecting time, focusing on what matters most, and bringing these ideas home.
As one person put it, “Gratitude goes beyond praise. It informs how we make decisions and shape our lives, professionally and personally.” Looking at this through the Notice, Evolve, Thrive lens, here’s what I see: Notice – The shift from autopilot to paying attention to what’s good, what’s working, and what truly matters. Evolve – Adopting small, actionable strategies that stick. Thrive – Creating environments at school, at home, and in our communities where people feel valued, supported, and inspired.
We don’t have to wait for the perfect time to start. We can step into this way of living right now, together. Let’s keep noticing, evolving, and thriving at every age and in every season.
