His work reminds us that high standards matter, but support cannot stop at "You've got this." In 10 to 25: The Science of Motivating Young People, David unpacks what he calls the mentor mindset: high standards and high support. Not low standards. Not pressure without help. And not empty encouragement. One part of our conversation that especially stood out to me was this idea that support is not the same as doing it for someone. And it is not just offering moral support and walking away. The questions that actually move people forward sound more like, "What have you tried?" or "What is getting in the way?" A few takeaways that feel especially useful: Support is not rescuing others from hard things. Support is not doing the work for them. Support is removing barriers that make growth harder than it needs to be. High standards matter more, not less, when people know they are truly supported.
For educators, leaders, and parents, we can believe in people enough to expect a lot from them. And we can support them enough to help them get there.
